Human Emphasis:
In contrast to the realist works, the most commonly used word in the corpus of books written during the romantic period is man. In addition to that, men is the eighth most used word throughout the corpus. When observing this corpus going forward, and making conclusions about romantic writing in general it is important to remember that these romantic works really emphasize man and are centered around humans. Another major theme that was observed while researching this corpus is a focus on time and length. The words life (6th most used in entire corpus), time (7th), long (8th), old (9th), young (15th), and new (27th) are all commonly used throughout each of these three books. The first observation drawn from this is that the vocabulary in these books really emphasizes time and age which is pretty interesting. Another observation is that the words long and old are both used more than the words young and short which could imply that longer amounts of time and older age are valued more than youthfulness and such. Another observation drawn from studying these books individually is that their titles indicate very strongly about what will be in the book as The Scarlet Letter contains the words scarlet and letter pretty frequently, The Last of the Mohicans contains the word indian very frequently and the third most used word in Walden is pond which is significant because the name of the pond is Walden. This shows that the titles of these three books are indicative of important words that are used frequently throughout these books. The last observation about these works is that the main characters are emphasized very frequently as Scout (name of main character in The Last of the Mohicans) is the most used word in The Last of the Mohicans, Hester (main character) is the most used word in the Scarlet Letter, and I is the most used word in Walden which is written in first person.
